ObjectiveThe objective of this course is to gain a proficiency of the Hawaii State Standards in Social Studies. Students will develop an understanding of how events in history have shaped and influenced their lives and the world they live in today. They will develop empathy by being exposed to the issues and events experienced by the people involved. They will also develop an understanding of how events and decisions by the participants affect events and actions throughout history and how it could influence our future. As a result, students will be able to make informed decisions and become an effective participant in today’s society.
Course of StudyAs outcomes of this course of study, students will demonstrate knowledge and understanding in the HCPS III for 8th Grade Social Studies. This focuses on the period of U.S. History from the creation of the U.S. Constitution to Reconstruction following the Civil War. In addition, students will develop their geography/map skills, citizenship skills, and have activities, lessons and projects that supplement their math and language arts classes. In addition, Common Core Standards for Social Studies will be integrated into the lessons. The students will also study the people and events that led up to the creation of our nation, civil rights issues and current events.
The students will use a variety of resources for this classroom. In addition to a class textbook, the class will include doing projects, activities, worksheets, videos, books and the internet. Students need to submit their internet use form before being allowed access to the internet in class. The honors class will include additional rigor embedded into lessons, enrichment activities, and supplemental projects and assignments. Materials
